How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog? A Groomer's Answer

- A bath: about every 10 days
- A groom (haircut & styling): every one to two months, depending on how fast their coat grows
- In the end, it depends on their coat and skin
"How often should my dog have a bath?" is one of the questions owners ask us most. The answer comes in two halves: a bath and a groom are different things, on different schedules.
What two months roughly look like
Bath vs groom: what's the difference?
Many owners think of a "bath" and a "groom" as the same thing. Here's how we split them:
Bath and blow-dry, plus nail trim, ear cleaning and ear-hair plucking, anal-gland expression, and a paw-pad and hygiene trim. Clean and comfortable.

from RM85So "every 10 days" is about bathing; "every one to two months" is about haircuts. See dog grooming prices →
Why isn't it the same for every dog?
Ten days is a guide, not a rule. How often your dog actually needs it depends on two things:
Not sure what suits your dog? Just ask our groomer next time you come in.
When can a puppy have a bath?
Once they've finished their vaccinations, they can come in for a bath. For a groom (haircut), we suggest at least two baths first — puppies who aren't used to grooming tend to wriggle, and that's when accidents happen. Getting to know the place, and us, first makes grooming much smoother later.
And cats?
For cats, a bath about every one to two months is enough. Lots of cats dislike water, so we keep it quick to cut down their time in it. See cat grooming prices →
Bath at home, or bring them in?
Bathing at home is absolutely fine — plenty of owners do it between visits.
When you bring them in, along with the bath and blow-dry we also trim nails, clean ears, pluck ear hair and express anal glands — things that are hard to do at home — and we check their skin and coat every time.
