# Why Does My Dog Keep Licking Their Paws?

A cone helps for a while~

The short answer

- **It usually starts with stress or boredom** — like people biting their nails
- **Over time it becomes a habit**: gently interrupt and redirect them
- **Red, swollen or oozing toes**: don't treat it yourself — see a vet

“Why does my dog keep licking their paws?” We hear this a lot from owners at the shop. After looking after so many dogs for grooming and boarding, here's how it usually starts.

## It starts with stress or boredom

Just as people bite their nails when they're nervous, dogs lick their paws to calm themselves down. A new place, an empty house, or not enough time out to burn energy can all set it off.

Plenty of the dogs who stay with us have perfectly healthy skin — they're simply a bit anxious or bored.

## Then it becomes a habit

This is the part we worry about more: licking whenever there's a spare moment, and not being able to stop.

**Gently interrupt it**Take them to play or for a walk, and move their attention elsewhere.

**If they really can't stop**A cone can help for a while — take it off once their attention has moved on.

## When should you see a vet?

If the toes are already **red, swollen or oozing**, or the licking has caused hair loss or broken skin, don't handle it yourself — a vet visit is the safer choice.

## Everyday paw care

**Check the paws every day**Look for redness or anything stuck, so you catch problems early.

**Dry them after walks and baths**Especially between the toes — damp is where trouble starts.

**Trim the paw-pad hair regularly**It keeps paws dry and airy, and less slippery too.

**More exercise, more play**Boredom is the enemy. A tired dog licks less.

## We keep an eye out, too

Every time your dog comes in for grooming or boarding, we check their skin and paws first, and tell you if anything looks off. Paw-pad trimming is already part of our Basic Groom. For sensitive, itchy skin, ask us about our spa treatments. [See the spas →](/pet-grooming/#spa)
